Nachdem die Katheterablation die Therapie paroxysmaler supraventrikulärer Tachykardien wie der AV-Knoten-Reentry-Tachykardie und dem WPW-Syndrom revolutioniert hat, erhofft man sich ähnliche Ergebnisse der Behandlung von Vorhofflimmern (AF). Aber schon die Frage, wie eine Katheterablation bei AF durchgeführt werden soll, ist unklar. Zwei verschiedene Ansätze werden derzeit erprobt.
