Base induced S-demethylation of dimethyl α-oxoketenedithioacetals with dimsyl sodium gave methyl β-oxodithiocarboxylates in good yields while cyclic ketenedithioacetals having a 1,3-dithiolane moiety underwent a fragmentation reaction leading to vinyl β-oxodithiocarboxylates.
