Highly active homogeneous catalysis for debenzylation of benzyl esters, benzyl ethers, and N-benzylamides has been developed: water-tolerant and extremely strong acids such as tris(triflyl)methane and scandium(III) tris(triflyl)methide catalytically promote the debenzylation in the presence of excess anisole. Copper(II) tris(triflyl)methide is also effective for the debenzylation of N-benzylamides.
