A facile and novel 4-hydroxy-δ-lactone synthesis is described. 2-Substituted 3-hydroxy-5-tri(butyl)stannylpentanoic acids were treated with lead tetraacetate (LTA) for 5 minutes to give 4-hydroxy-δ-lactones in good yields.
