Scandium trifluoromethanesulfonimide and scandium trifluoromethanesulfonate are highly efficient Lewis acid catalysts in a variety of acetalizations. These catalysts are also effective for diastereoselective preparation of 2,5-disubstituted 1,3-dioxolanones and 2,6-disubstituted 1,3-dioxanones.
