A synthesis of the new metastable enol 2 as well as its reactivity towards basic and acidic reagents are described. Pyruvic acid derivatives 6, 9, 10-13 obtained from 2 are valuable building blocks for the synthesis of α-difluoromethyl substituted α-hydroxy and α-amino acids.
