A method for the preparation of 1-aryl-β-carbolines is reported which provides these compounds in three steps (starting from 1-phenylsulfonyl-3-vinylindole) in yields of 40-60%. This method circumvents the use of acidic conditions at all stages. Additionally, its use in the preparation of a natural product is reported.
