Reaction of maleic anhydride with 2-oxazolidinone in the presence of triethylamine yields mono functionalized maleic acid, which is transformed into functionalized N-fumaroyl-2-oxazolidinones in 45-56% overall yields by treatment with oxalyl chloride and subsequent reaction with nucleophiles.
