A straightforward strategy for the synthesis of the novel title heterophanes containing heterocyclic betaines as building blocks and their alkyl-substituted derivatives is reported, typifying the first example of simple heterophanes constructed by both highly π-excessive and highly π-deficient heteroaromatic moieties linked in a 1,3-alternating fashion.
