A high yielding synthesis of trimethyltetrathiafulvalene is reported and a range of functionalised derivatives have been prepared via reactions of trimethyltetrathiavulvalenyllithium with electrophiles.

Monofunctionalised trimethyltetrathiafulvalene derivatives have been synthesized by electrophilic addition to lithiated trimethyltetrathiafulvalene and further elaboration of carboxylic acid, aldehyde and alcohol functionalities
