Three different microorganisms capable of metabolizing pyridinecarboxylic acids were used for the regiospecific hydroxylation of all three ring carbon atoms of pyrazinecarboxylic acid to 3-hydroxy-5-hydroxy- or 6-hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid1. 5-Hydroxypyrazine-2-carboxylic acid was used for the preparation of 5-substituted pyrazine-2-carboxylic acids.
