A thorough investigation of the reactions of dicobalthexacarbonyl stabilized propargyl cations 2 with differently substituted indoles 1 is described, leading to a general reaction scheme for this type of propargylations. The resulting products 3,5,7 and 9 (the latter arising from a tandem electrophilic/nucleophilic addition) and the corresponding demetalated compounds 4,6,8 and 10 should prove to be versatile building blocks for the synthesis of polycyclic indole derivatives.
