Oxidation of 2-aryl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-4-quinolines 1a-d and their N-acetyl derivatives 3a-d using thallium(III) nitrate and thallium(III) p-tolylsulphonate in acetonitrile-trialkyl orthoformate provides a novel entry for the synthesis of 4-alkoxy-2-arylquinolines 2a-e and 3-aryl-4-quinolone alkaloids, respectively.
