A new, short synthesis of the glycine antagonist 3R,4R)-3-amino-1-hydroxy-4-methylpyrrolidin-2-one (L-687,414) (1) is described, which proceeds in six steps (14% overall yield), starting from commercially available (S)-β-methyl-γ-butyrolactone (4).
