Irradiation of arenecarbothioamides 1 and 5 with styrene derivatives 2 gave 2-aroyl-2-phenylethanethiol derivatives 3 and α-aroylstyrene derivatives 4 and 6. The photoproduct 3 was easily converted into 4 by treatment with mercury(II) acetate.
