A facile synthesis of 2-substituted and 2,5-disubstituted benzo[b]furans and homologues 4, by the coupling of 2-hydroxyaryl iodides 1 and terminal acetylenes 2 in the presence of bis(triphenylphosphine)palladium(II) chloride and copper(I) iodide as catalysts, has been accomplished.
