A domestic microwave oven has been used to accelerate the Hantzsch synthesis of dialkyl 4-aryl-2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dihydro-3,5-pyridinedicarboxylates 1 and a variant leading to 4,4-dialkyl-2,6-dimethyl-1,4-dihydro-3,5-pyridinedicarbonitriles 2. In comparison with the traditional reflux method, similar or higher yields were obtained.
