A series of ß-oxonitriles 1 were obtained in good yields through the electrochemical coupling of nitriles with aromatic or aliphatic esters. The reaction was catalyzed by samarium(III) chloride using tert-butyl alcohol as a probase. Electrolyses were run under mild conditions in an undivided cell with a magnesium anode.
