Modest diastereoselectivity is observed in the addition to N-isobutylidenebenzylamine (2) and other N-isobutylidenearylamines of ethyl trimethylsilyl phenylphosphonite (1a) but not of the corresponding unsilylated (1b) or lithiated species (1c). The size of the aryl N-substituent exerts a small effect on the diastereoselectivity of C-P bond formation.
