New atropisomeric biphenylbisphosphines, 6,2′ -bis(diphenylphosphino)-3-methoxy-2, 4-dimethyl-4′,6′ -bis(trifluoromethyl)-1,1′-biphenyl (FUPMOP) and 2,2′-bis(diphenylphoshino)-4,6,4′,6′-tetrakis(trifluoromethyl)-1, 1′-biphenyl (BIFUP), have been prepared from 2-bromo-3, 5-bis(trifluoromethyl)nitrobenzene. The FUPMOP-ruthenium(II) complex proved to be an excellent catalyst for the asymmetric hydrogenation of methyl 3-oxobutanoate.
