The electrochemical reduction of alkanals 1 arenecarbaldehydes 2, and aryl methyl ketones 3 with sacrificial zinc or magnesium anodes in dimethylformamide was carried out on a preparative scale to yield 1,2-diols 4-6 in moderate to nearly quantitative yield, depending on the compound class. The 1,2-diaryl 1,2-diols were obtained in very high diastereomeric excesses and in quantities of 35 g per run.
