Arenecarboxylic acids were prepared by the copper(II) chloride catalyzed carboxydediazoniation of the corresponding arenediazonium tetrafluoroborates with carbon monoxide in aqueous dioxane solution. Preparative aspects of the reaction, as well as the mechanism involving modified Meerwein-type arylation of carbon monoxide, are discussed.
