The manganese(II) acetate catalyzed epoxidation of α-methylstyrene or styrene with iodosylbenzene or hydration via oxidation-reduction with phenylsilane and molecular oxygen was enhanced by the 2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide of histamine (N,N′-bis[2-(4-imidazolyl)ethyl]-2,6-pyridinedicarboxamide). Use of VO(OEt)Cl2 instead, in the latter system, led to the catalytic oxidative bond cleavage of α-methyl- or α-phenylstyrene to give acetophenone or benzophenone respectively.
