Halogenated tetrahydrophthalic anhydrides (4-cyclohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydrides) can be aromatized to phthalic anhydrides in a simple manner by using activated carbon in a high boiling solvent (1,2,4-trichlorobenzene). The method has been applied to the preparation of 4,5-dichlorophthalic anhydride and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride starting from the corresponding chloro-substituted 4-cylohexene-1,2-dicarboxylic anhydrides.
