During the synthesis of avermectin B1a (1) the C11-C25 spiroacetal portion 2 has been prepared using a novel sequence of reactions involving π-allyltricarbonyliron lactone complexes 5 and 6 for the preparation of the cyclic ether sulphone, 8 which in turn was coupled and spirocyclised to give 2.
