Vanadium dichloride induced the regioselective addition reaction of bromotrichloromethane to terminal olefins such as allyl acetate, allyl phenyl ether, and vinyl acetate giving Cl3CCH2CH(Br)R. In the case of hydroxy olefins, addition of bromotrichloromethane was followed by cyclization to an oxacycloalkane.
