The first total syntheses of racemic axamide-4 (1), axisonitrile-4 (2), and axisothiocyanate-4 (3) are described. The syntheses revolve around the preparation of oxo ester 8 using an intramolecular conjugate addition to construct the cis-perhydroindan nucleus.
