A number of mesoionic compounds 4 (5-phenylthiazolo [2,3-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazolium-2-arylaminides), derivatives of the thiazolo[2,3-b]-1,3,4-thiadiazole ring system, have been prepared from 3-amino-2-benzylthio-4-phenylthiazolium cation 2 and aryl isothiocyanates in the presence of triethylamine. Aldimine 5 reacts with phenacyl bromides under mild conditions to give 2,3-dihydro-4H-thiazolo [2,3-b][1,3,4]thiadiazin-5-ium bromides 7.
