Das Ziel, die Polio auszurotten, rückt immer weiter in die Ferne. Das liegt nicht zuletzt auch am empfohlenen Totimpfstoff. Denn dieser verursacht keine Darmimmunität – und so können geimpfte Personen in Endemiegebieten jahrelang unbemerkt Polioviren ausscheiden. Durch die Flüchtlingskrise wächst die Gefahr, dass die Viren auf diese Weise auch in poliofreie Gebiete eingeschleppt werden.
