Abstract

A copper complex has been found to catalyze the borylstannylation of alkenes through three-component coupling with a diboron and a tin alkoxide, affording vic-borylstannylalkanes of structural diversity in a regio- and stereoselective manner. The versatility of this borylstannylation has been also demonstrated by employing allenes, leading to the sole formation of borylstannylated products, which have alkenylborane and allylstannane units.

  • 16 We observed formation of a hydroboration product as a side product when yields of the borylstannylation products were low (e.g., entries 4 and 6).
  • 17 Other α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds including chalcone, methyl tiglate, ethyl 3,3-dimethylacrylate, N,N-dimethylacrylamide, diethyl vinylphosphonate, dimethyl maleate, acrylonitrile, and furan-2(5H)-one were not transformed into borylstannylation products.
  • 18 The reaction with Cu(OAc)2–Cy3P catalytic system did not afford the desired product at all.
  • 19 The borylstannylation did not occur with styrene.

  • 21 Although the authors did not describe in ref. 20 the stereo-chemical behavior (retention or inversion) of a β-borylalkyl-copper species in the reaction of (E)-β-methylstyrene with MeOD, the observed stereochemistry of a deuterioboration product implies that the capture of the β-borylalkylcopper species with MeOD should proceed with retention of configuration, because syn-borylcupration generally occurs with an alkene. For syn-borylcupration of an alkene, see: references 14a, 14d and 14e.
  • 22 Although we have checked the reaction of 1k at shorter time (1 min and 10 min), the proposed intermediate (14) could not be detected at all. At present, we suppose that the reactivity of 14 toward the borylcopper species should be much higher than that of 1k.
