Abstract

Since the 12 years after its invention, the development of capsule endoscopy has evolved rapidly. The developments in the fields of hard- and software have been aimed to expand the recording capacity, to increase the diagnostic yield and thereby to enlarge the acceptance of this method both in physicians and patients. Secondly the expansion of indications to all parts of the GI tract is being focused. Innovations for the future contain various possibilities of digitally preprocessing of capsule films, the development of active locomotion and steering mechanisms as well as the integration of various built-in sensors and therapeutic implications into the capsule. Apart from that first attempts of a „mouth-to-anus“-capsule have been tested to visualize the whole GI tract.
