Significance

Gold nanoparticles supported on periodic mesoporous organosilica (Au@PMO) were prepared by treatment of NaAuCl4 with phenylene-containing periodic mesoporous organosilica (PMO), followed by the reduction with NaBH4 (eq. 1). Au@PMO catalyzed the Ullmann reaction of phenyl iodides to give the corresponding biphenyls in 80-95% yield (5 examples, eq. 2). In the reaction of iodobenzene, the catalyst was recovered and reused four times (4th reuse run: 80% yield).
