Significance

In this work a novel preparation of cyclopentenone derivatives is described. The reported [3+2] cycloaddition reaction of α,β-unsaturated phenyl esters and alkynes is catalyzed by nickel and represents the first cycloaddition in which the metal-catalyzed C-O bond activation is used.
