Significance

Reported is the multicomponent ­reaction of aromatic aldehydes and alkynes with 6-amino coumarins or 6-amino quinolones to give the tricyclic products shown. This reaction is proposed to proceed first through formation of the requisite imine, followed by an aza-Diels-Alder ­reaction. For optimum yields, a slight excess of the amine and the aldehyde with respect to the alkyne is required.
