Significance

The authors report a synthesis for thieno[3,2-b]quinolines 4 that is as easy as it is novel. The two-step, one-pot procedure gives the desired product in considerably better yield than the two previously reported syntheses of similar substrates. Additionally, compound 4 is accessed via a remarkable rearrangement of 3, the first reported cyclobutanaphthalene system containing two heteroatoms.
