Significance

Palladium nanoparticles (average particle size ca. 2.2 nm) were prepared by a sputter deposition of palladium onto 1-butyl-3-methylimidazolium bis(trifluoromethanesulfonyl)-imide (BMI-TFSI). The palladium nanoparticles in BMI-TFSI (Pd/BMI-TFSI) catalyzed the Suzuki-Miyaura coupling of aryl halides 1 with aryl boronic acids 2 in the presence of cesium carbonate in water to give the corresponding biaryls 3 in up to 99% yield (17 examples).
