Significance

The authors describe the facile preparation of an intensely fluorescent rhomboid cavitand from the self-assembly of Bodipy 1 with a platinum(II) salt. Unlike almost all coordination-driven self-assembled chromophoric systems, 2 retains the excellent photophysical properties of the parent Bodipy. This is most likely due to the rigid molecular architecture suppressing energy transfer from the dye to the metal ion.
