Significance

Bidentate phosphine ligands are exceptionally useful for enantioselective catalysis. The use of chiral secondary phosphine oxides (SPOs) is a much less well-developed field. The authors explore the use of mixed ligands containing both an SPO and a phosphine moiety. The resulting ligands - named JoSPOphos for those with a Josiphos-like backbond, and TerSPOphos for those based on chiral terpenes - demonstrate high activity and enantioselectivity in asymmetric hydrogenations of alkenes.
