Significance

The synthesis of chiral phosphine containing motifs has become a popular endeavor in asymmetric synthesis owing to their interesting biological properties and applications as chiral synthons and ligands. Phosphines and alkyl phosphites can be used as nucleophiles in 1,2- and 1,4-additions, but examples of phosphine oxides are less common. Herein, the authors describe an asymmetric application of phosphine oxides as nucleophiles in a Michael-type addition.
