Significance

The authors demonstrate the synthesis of several new porphyrins with extended, fused aromatic structures. Utilizing bulky aryl and aryl ether substituents to prevent aggregation (and thus help solubility throughout the synthesis), anthracenes can be efficiently cross-coupled as well as oxidatively appended to the porphyrin core. Single crystal X-ray analysis of nickel porphyrin 3 confirmed the planar geometry of the central π-system.
