Summary

Of 51 patients with diabetic retinopathy 30 were given 40 g. fructose daily for three years in addition to the standard antidiabetic treatment, while ten received mannitol as a placebo and the remaining 11 neither fructose nor mannitol. Fructose was well tolerated and did not worsen the metabolic state, but no improvement in retinopathy was observed. The absorption of fundal haemorrhages in some patients of the different groups was probably due to better control of the diabetes.
