After presenting the clinical and laboratory results of a case of inconstant, atypical paraproteinaemia in a 77-year-old woman, the clinical value of immuno-electrophoretic studies in the demonstration of paraproteinaemia is discussed. It is not yet clear to what extent repeatability of abnormal electrophoretic findings should be part of the definition of paraproteinaemia.
