Significance

The aerobic oxidation of alcohols was performed with deposited gold clusters on porous coordination polymers (PCPs) such as MOF-5, Al-MIL53, CPL-1, CPL-2 and Cu-BTC in MeOH. Thus, the oxidation of benzyl alcohol (1) was carried out in methanol with Au/MOF-5 and K2CO3 under O2 to give methyl benzoate (2) in 91% yield. The oxidation of 1-phenylethanol (3) with Au/MOF-5 under similar conditions gave acetophenone (4) in 79% yield.
