Dieser Artikel stellt eine quantitativ inhaltsanalytische Studie zu psychologischen Prozessen in den Briefen Vincent van Goghs vor [1]. Ihre Ergebnisse sprechen gegen das Narrativ von van Goghs Suizid und bestärken die Annahme der neueren Forschung, dass sein Tod die Folge eines Unfalls oder Tötungsdelikts war. Der in der Studie entwickelte Index könnte nach seiner Validierung für die klinische Diagnostik von Suizidalität relevant sein.

Abstract

This text presents a study that examines van Gogh’s suicidality quantitatively content-analytically for the first time over the entire period of his correspondence using the program Linguistic Inquiry and Word Count (LIWC 2015). An index of variables was formed to capture suicidality in life stages. The results argue against the narrative about van Gogh’s suicide and reinforce the assumption in recent research that his death was the result of an accident or homicide. The suicidality index developed in this study – once validated and in combination with other methods – could be relevant for diagnostics in medical psychology and forensic medicine.

  • Die Ergebnisse der Studie liefern ein wichtiges Argument gegen das Narrativ vom Suizid van Goghs – sie stellen die in der Forschung verbreitete These eines lebenslangen suizidalen Prozesses grundsätzlich infrage.

  • Auf der Basis der Auswertung eines breiten Spektrums medizinischer und psychologischer Fachliteratur wurden Variablen identifiziert, aus denen ein Suizidalitätsindex gebildet wurde.

  • Mittels seiner Anwendung konnten Lebensphasen ermittelt werden, in denen van Goghs Suizidalität deutlich höher war als in den letzten 14 Monaten seines Lebens.

  • Dieser Index kann für die Diagnostik von Suizidalität anhand von Texten/Sprache relevant sein.

  • Nach seiner Validierung und in Verbindung mit anderen Methoden könnte er in der Medizinischen Psychologie, Psychiatrie und Rechtsmedizin verwendet werden, um die Suizidgefährdung von Personen zu erkennen und Todesfälle aufzuklären.
