An asymmetric synthesis of (virtually configurationally pure) (R)-glutamic acids and/or the corresponding (R)-2-amino-5-pyrrolidinones starting with the bis-lactim ether of cyclo-(L-Val-Gly) and methyl 2-alkenoates is described.
