Significance

The synthesis of a porphyrin double dimer resembling a molecular tube is reported. The first dimerization is facilitated by acetylenic coupling of the single-ended porphyrin monomer, furnishing a molecular-wire-like structure. Two wires are subsequently held together by the template effect of 1,4-diazabicyclo[2.2.2]octane (DABCO), followed by olefin metathesis of the pre-installed terminal alkenes. The synthetic molecular tube is characterized by 1H, 13C NMR spectroscopy and MALDI-TOF MS spectroscopy.
