A new concerted approach to the formation of the trans-fused γ-lactone which bridges C-6 and C-7 in the germacranolide family of sesquiterpenoids is reported. Starting with enone 3 and using this approach, the synthesis of 2, a geometric isomer of the naturally occurring germacranolide 1, is outlined.
