Dr. David Dietz is a Staff Surgeon in the Department of Colon and Rectal Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio. Born in York, Pennsylvania, David received his undergraduate degree from Washington and Lee University in Lexington, Virginia. He earned his M.D. degree from Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia. He did an internship in general surgery at the Allegheny General Hospital in Pittsburgh, and completed his general surgery residency at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio. His training in Cleveland included a 2-year research fellowship. He then completed his colon and rectal surgery training at the Cleveland Clinic and served for 6 months as a Clinical Associate Surgeon. Subsequently, David joined the staff at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO. In addition to his duties as a Staff Surgeon, he served as the Assistant Program Director of their training program. After 5 years in St. Louis, David was recruited back to the Cleveland Clinic Foundation.

David is board certified in both general surgery and colon and rectal surgery and is an active participant in multiple surgical societies. He is an ad hoc reviewer of several journals and his contribution to the medical literature includes 28 peer-reviewed articles, 9 invited reviews, and 9 book chapters. He is an active researcher in the fields of inflammatory bowel disease and rectal cancer, with project funding from the Crohn's and Colitis Foundation of America and the American Cancer Society.

David, his wife Jill Richardson Dietz, M.D., and their children Audrey and William, live in Bentleyville, a suburb of Cleveland. When not working, David enjoys outdoor activities with his family on their farm, playing water polo with the local club team, and breeding and raising alpacas.
