Abstract

Imaging-guided chest drainage procedures have become commonplace in the treatment of parapneumonic effusions, malignant effusions, pneumothoraces, and, occasionally, mediastinal fluid collections. Many imaging modalities are available in the interventional radiologists' armamentarium to access these lesions. This article reviews the fundamentals of transthoracic drainage fluid or air collections. Specific applications of the new radiologic techniques computed tomography fluoroscopy and portable computed tomography will be emphasized.
