Dr. Michael J. Stamos is Professor of Surgery at University of California Irvine (UCI) School of Medicine and Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. Michael was born in Miami, Florida and received his undergraduate and M.D. degrees from Case Western Reserve University in Cleveland, Ohio. He completed his internship and residency at University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Medical Center in Miami, Florida and received his fellowship training at the Ochsner Clinic in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Michael then moved west, where he joined the University of California Los Angeles faculty and worked primarily at Harbor UCLA Medical Center in Torrance, California for 11 years. In 2002 he went to UC Irvine Medical Center to establish the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery at that institution, and from 2005 to 2006 he served as Interim Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCI. He is currently Chief of the Division of Colon and Rectal Surgery. He is board certified in general surgery and colon and rectal surgery.

Dr. Stamos maintains a busy clinical practice at the University of California, Irvine Medical Center, a large referral center at which reoperative surgery is a common occurrence. In addition to his clinical activities, Michael is an active researcher and participant in the general surgery residency program. He is member of multiple professional associations and serves as a member at large of the executive council of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons. In addition, he has published multiple peer-reviewed articles and book chapters.

Michael and his wife, Bridget, and his son, Ilias, live in Rolling Hills Estates in Southern California. Michael enjoys the California climate and geography with an active lifestyle including hiking the local terrain. He is also an avid bicyclist and he spends his available free time catching bugs with his 5-year-old son, a budding entomologist.
